Early Boating

Before mechanization, getting around the lake wasn't easy, especially with a load. A type of sailboat called a gundalow, was used in the early 1800's, but limited by inconsistent wind. A 25 or 30 mile trip often took 2 to 3 days. Horseboats appeared in the late 1830's and were only limited by the strength and endurance of the draft horses. Here are a few photos including Goodhue & Hawkins Navy Yard boat building.

The Wolfeboro Historical Society welcomes the donation of local photographs from the early days, as well as any details that may be found in ancestors attics.
