This photo on South Main St., c. 1900, is taken from Pickering Corner, near the present Brewster soccer field, looking across the street. The house in the center is sometimes known as the Whitton House, built c. 1824. It has been used for many commercial stores, beginning with Samuel Avery, the grandfather of J. Clifton Avery, noted insurance agent. On the left is the Daniel Pickering House, recently restored. On the right is the Scott House; the brick building was the home of the Wolfeborough Bank from 1834-1839. Dr. Nathaniel Scott, a prominent physician, & his family lived there for many years. It was also a boarding house, sometimes for Brewster Academy students, who called it Scott's Palace, for its superior accommodations. All three buildings are still in use today.
