Fire Department

Volunteer Fire Departments began in 1862, when the Monitor Engine Co. was formed in South Wolfeboro. A used hand pumper was purchased and stored in local barns until a Firehouse was built behind the building known as Rust's Store. The bulk of the Town followed in 1866, when a Fire Precinct was established, and Carroll Engine Co. was formed, also with a used hand pumper. Their building, near Pickering Corner, was on the site recently used by Citizen's Bank. Each Company had a hose wagon to follow the pumper, initially 2-wheel hand drawn, but later horse drawn wagons were used. As the water system was built, with many hydrants, Hose Companies prevailed. By 1891, there were 4 Hose Companies: Monitor, in South Wolfeboro; Rollins, in the Carroll firehouse; Eagle, on River St.; and Wiggin, somewhere near the First Christian Church (no known building, believe their Hose Wagon was stored in barns). There was also some capability around Goose Corner, with equipment stored in barns, but no specific information. In the 1920's, the equipment for the growing Town required more space, and the new Firehouse on Factory St. centralized the Fire Precinct.

The Wolfeboro Historical Society welcomes the donation of local photographs from the early days, as well as any details that may be found in ancestors attics.
