Cutting the hay is the first step in the harvest. Photo is c. 1890's. Agriculture was an important local industry for nearly 200 years. The second man on the right is using a cradle scythe, a design that lays the cut stalks in neat piles, making it easier to pick up. Takes a little extra training to use than an ordinary scythe, which has only a handle and a blade, but is a definite time saver.
