Waterfront and Dockside

This photo of downtown dates before 1899. On the left are the buildings on Lake St., then the tall Durgin building with its cupola, then the wharf area. The wharf has the original 3-story Goodwin Block and the small building at the end of the dock; both of these were among a number of buildings destroyed in the great fire of 1899. The adjacent large building, the Peavey Block, was saved and is now known as the Avery Block. Right of center is the Lake Shore House, now the site of Cate and Town Park. Above it is seen the mansard roof of the Glendon House, now the site of the Post Office. The large boathouse belonged to the Kingswood Inn, originally the Pavilion Hotel at Pickering Corner.
