In the early 1800's, it was considered elegant to have large wall murals painted in the rooms where guests were entertained. Few of these survive today. Most of the work in Wolfeboro was done by an itinerant artist named John Avery, a relative of the prominent Avery family. This example is noted as possibly in the Stoddard house, which would have been in the Cotton Valley area.
