Fourth of July, 1961. The Malone Knitting Co. won the Grand Prize for their Space Age, USA, float. The space race was in full stride, with Russian Yuri Gagarin first in April with a 103 minute trip, then followed in May by Derry, NH, native, Alan Shepard riding Freedom 7 in a 15 minute suborbital flight. The Malone Knitting Co. was founded by Theodore Malone in 1928, and had a branch in Wolfeboro, in the Bell Building, also known as the Big Factory, on Lehner St. from 1943 to 1967.
