Schools

The first school districts were established in 1790. Schools were set up in private homes, with the town providing furnishings and equipment. Most districts later built One-Room Schoolhouses. These early district schools only provided elementary education. The need for secondary education was recognized in 1820, and resulted in the Wolfeborough and Tuftonborough Academy building opening in September 1821 on the site of the present Town Hall. This provided high school education until 1887, when Brewster Free Academy was established. Brewster then served as the high school until the Kingswood Regional High School opened in Sept. 1964.

Further information on the Wolfeboro Schools is available in "History of the Town of Wolfeborough", by Benjamin F. Parker, 1901, reproduced by the Wolfeboro Historical Society in 1988. Also, in "The History of Wolfeboro, NH, 1770-1994", by Q. David Bowers, 1995. Both publications are available from the Wolfeboro Historical Society. The Bowers 3-volume set is also available at local bookstores.
