The centralized fireplace in the Clark House was the only source of heat. As you tour the house, the design of small rooms circling the fireplace is apparent. The fireplace is also the cooking facility. The blacksmith-made device that the sign is hanging on is called a "crane". It swings out to hook on or take off handled pots, adjust to best flame position, or take a taste test.
