Windance has been used as a teaching boat since 2014 by the Wolfeboro Parks and Rec/NH Boat Museum keel boat training program. She was retired from that service in 2022. She is fully seaworthy but could use some TLC. She could be restored to "bristol" condition without needing any structural work. Windance has been well looked after all her life and nothing is missing. She has serviceable sails including a barely used jib and spinnaker. She includes a very roadworthy trailer.
One of the features of an Ensign that is not found on many newer boats is the extensive use of mahogany and teak in the cockpit area. The design of the boat is such that a "boom tent" cockpit cover keeps all this fine woodwork in good condition during the sailing season while she is out in the elements. A boom tent is included with Windance.
The Ensign was first introduced in 1962. Over 2000 Ensigns have been build, and it is the most ubiquitous boat of its type in the world. Designed by Carl Alberg, its sustained popularity is due to its solid and durable construction. It is a design that lends itself equally to family cruising or serious racing. It is also greatly admired by many for its classic lines. The Ensign Class is a very strong and active national class organization, with numerous local fleets from coast to coast.
Wolfeboro was at one time a mecca for Ensign sailboats. One of the founders of the class association, John OConnell, was also the founder of the Wolfeboro Corinthian Yacht Club. In 1992 the Ensign National Regatta was held hosting many boats, some coming from hundreds of miles away to compete.
