An unusual craft on the lake was the horseboat, powered by two horses on a treadmill driving paddlewheels. The first one was believed built in Meredith, c. 1838. Several continued to operate into the 1880's, well after steamships became dominant. This photo on Lake Winnipesaukee was taken c. 1870's, 1880's; the load is a heavy pile of bricks.
