The original Goodwin Block on South Main St. was built in the 1860's between the Peavey Block and the bridge. This photo dates to the late 1870's. The four businesses and entryway were, L-R: Restaurant & billiard hall; A. W. Wiggin & Co. (agent for the Eastern Express Company); entryway (leads to offices on the second floor & Masonic Hall on the third floor); John D. Waite, millinery & dry goods; and Parker & Stout, apothecaries. The tracks next to the building led to the railroad station on the docks. The building burned down in 1899 and was quickly replaced by a simple one-story building.
