The Peavey Block on South Main St. (now known as the Avery Block) was built in 1889-1890. The 1890 date is on the top of the elaborate facade. This is an early 1890's photo. The Post Office is at the lower left corner, with the James Welton fruit & confectionery store behind it. The center store is the Parker & Richardson dry goods store. The Lewando & Mattison grocery & hardware store is on the right. The two upper floors held offices and apartments. The building on the right is the 3-story Goodwin Block, which burned down in 1899. The man in the grey suit in front of the Post Office is John L. Peavey, building developer. On the right with a small dog on a leash is Joseph Lewando.
