This view, taken after the great hurricane of Sept. 21, 1938, shows Front Bay (now known as Back Bay) completely blocked with logs waiting to be processed at the Goodwin & Doe Sawmill (formerly Clow's sawmill) just off the right end of the photo. In 1938, Back Bay was the area on the left side of the railroad causeway. Frequently used as a dumping ground, the area was reclaimed, filled in, and became an athletic field in 1967, now known as Foss Field. At the left are the Smith River dam at Wolfeboro Falls and the O. P. Berry Mill buildings. Factory St. (now Lehner St.) with the large Shoe Factory is on the far side of Back Bay.
