The sawmill was first known as the Steam Mill Co., established by Moses & Augustus Varney, Alpheus Swett, & Benjamin Morrison in 1851. It became Libbey, Varney, & Co. in 1865, then Libbey's sons, then Clow & Piper in 1898. The mill employed about 30 men. Stephen W. Clow is 2nd from left, in suit, tie & hat. The site later became the Hampshire Pewter factory & the Back Bay business center.
