George M. Phinney & Sons Blacksmith shop in Wolfeboro Falls, c. 1897, was located on Center St. across from the present Wright Museum. Sitting in the wagon is Dearborn Hersey, standing to his right are Mrs. & Mr. G. M. Phinney. In the late 1800's & early 1900's, there were several blacksmiths in town. The typical shop had a coal-fired furnace & made horseshoes, hinges, railings, wagon parts & wheel rims, gates & fences. The shops slowly disappeared as the automobile became popular & mass-manufactured hardware became available.
