A gristmill was built on the Smith River at Wolfeboro Falls as early as the spring of 1771. The owners were A. R. Cutter and David Sewall. They owned the mill for many years (unspecified), later there were other owners. A miller was in charge of the operations. This 1886 photo is of the miller, John Patterson, his wife Emily (both in the back), son Emil?, age 13 (in the wagon seat), and daughters Margaret and Cora, ages 7 and 6. The man standing at the left is the horse's owner.
