On August 9, 1887, a spectacular fire burned down the massive shoe factory building at the end of Factory St. (now Lehner St.). All that is left are the foundation and the smokestack. Eight residences and a large amount of finished lumber from the Libbey and Varney Lumber Mill were also destroyed. The 4-story, 200 foot long, shoe factory was rebuilt on the same foundation within a year.
