Waterfront and Dockside

This photo was taken in May, 1916, and illustrates the considerable changes that have since been made in the Dockside area. The road seen in the middle is South Main St. The tall building on the far side left background was the Glendon House, built in 1872, called the Hotel Elmwood in 1916, razed in 1935 and now the site of the Post Office. The fence across the road is now the supermarket parking lot. The buildings on the right date to 1847, were the Lake Shore House at the time; razed in 1940, the site is now Cate and Town Park. Notice how close the water is to the street. A large area was filled in, in the early 1940's, adding about a hundred feet of land extending toward the lake.
