May 22, 1993, the leader in the Smith River Canoe Race nears the finish line at the end of the town docks. This popular annual event was started in 1973, and is now run by the Lion's Club to benefit local charities. The Race starts at Albee Beach on Lake Wentworth. The 3 1/2 mile course, for canoes and kayaks, goes through the Smith River to Crescent Lake, then a short portage past the dam, has an exciting run thru the Smith River rapids to the mill pond at Center St. Another short portage past the mill dam is followed by the home stretch under the Main St. bridge to the town docks.
