View from Town Hall looking west, c. 1900. The two houses in the foreground are now the site of the supermarket & drugstore. The mansard-roofed building in the right center is the Glendon House, later the Hotel Elmwood, then Hobbs-Is-Inn, and now the site of the Post Office. The Bank Building is in the center. In the left foreground, the group of staggered buildings is the Lake Shore House, later the Ann Inn, razed in 1940 to become Town & Cate Park. The open water is by the outlet of the Smith River flowing thru Back Bay. Follow the curve in Main St. & the Durgin Block (with its original prominent cupola) is on the right; on the left is the round turret of the Piper House, which was moved closer to the Lake in 1956 (its original site is now the Yum Yum Bakery).
