George A. Carpenter. Born in Boston in 1857, he began business as a jeweler in Wolfeboro in the 1870's. He later moved to Boston and made a fortune in real estate and other ventures, but continued to spend much time in his native town. He lavished many gifts upon Wolfeboro, including funding for Carpenter School (named for his mother Lavonia Carpenter), Huggins Hospital, gifts and medical care for children, and shoes and clothing for the needy. His stately home, Cobham Hall, is now part of Brewster Academy. He died in 1934.
