Boston and Maine Railroad wharf building built in the early 1870's. Photo is c. mid-1890's. The first floor was used for freight storage and, at various times, the fish market (shown), a pool hall and a saloon. The second floor was known as Dartmouth Hall, used as a roller skating rink, dance hall, and a general gathering spot for events, including political rallies. The building burned down in 1899 in the Goodwin Block fire. The back of the Goodwin Block is on the left. The view is from the downtown bridge over the outlet of Back Bay, once known as Front Bay.
