Busy days at the town docks, May 29, 1916. The Peavey Block (now Avery Block) looks much like it is today. The cupola of the Durgin Block across North Main St. is in the left background. On the far left is the turret of the Piper house, which was at the street, but was moved toward the shore in 1956(the Yum Yum Bakery is on the former location. Frank Hobbs owned the docks behind the Peavey Block and allowed public use, but cautioned that, in busy times, use should be restricted to short errands or passenger drop off or pick up. Note how close the nearest docks are to the buildings. This area wasn't filled in until the early 1940's. Also interesting is that several of the boats have no engines. Wonder how far they had to row.
